My work is always part of a continuous process of exploration into the many facets of personal identity and the anxiety of the human condition. As occupiers of the vastness of earth and the small place it takes up in the universe, it is often too overwhelming to begin to comprehend our individual part in the process of life. To understand our part in the ‘bigger picture’, I have always considered the way to ‘find oneself ‘ or understand ‘why we are who we are’ is to work back through history. While being introspective when seeking to understand ones identity, I am also of the view we are able to discover an enormous amount of knowledge about ourselves when we look at the network of connecting humans through the lens of ancestry and family history researching. Looking at ancestral heritage involves sifting through a wealth of information which then offers up an enormity of avenues to consider for hints and clues to relate us physically and characteristically to our forbears. As technology advances there is more insight available to us now via the research into genetic inheritance. Physically and mentally we echo our parents and to a lesser extent our grandparents, great-grandparents and so on. It follows then that some small fragments (naturally invisible) filter down through time through generation to generation and will go on doing so. Our identity then, is not a single form but a complex mix of human inheritance ,continuously evolving and reforming and recreating itself.
